Many people, especially adults, are choosing Invisalign over traditional braces to transform their smiles. It is often easier, more comfortable to wear, and more subtle than metal braces. However, when aligners are worn for 22 hours a day, or longer, it is important to keep them clean and in good condition. Without regular maintenance, aligners can get cloudy (not a great look!), smelly, and susceptible to bacterial build-up.

Just like your teeth, your Invisalign trays also need daily cleaning. Here is a suggested daily routine to keep your trays sparkling!

First Things First, Clean Your Teeth and Invisalign

You probably already have the habit of brushing your teeth every morning when you wake up (we certainly hope so!), so simply adding the extra step of cleaning the trays before putting them back in shouldn’t be too difficult! Bacteria can build up while you sleep, so it is essential to start the day with a clean mouth. This step should also be repeated when you brush before bed.

Rinse Aligners Every Time They are Removed

Make sure to rinse your trays with cold water every time you take them out to remove any dried saliva, and always store them in their case. Remember not to use hot water as it can warp the tray shape.

Brush and Floss Before Wearing The Trays

Ideally, you should be removing your trays every time you eat or drink (other than water). Remember to brush and floss before putting the aligners back in to prevent trapping small food particles in the trays, which could lead to cavities and dental problems down the road.

Soak Daily

The best way to thoroughly clean Invisalign trays is to soak them daily in Invisalign cleaning crystals or a denture cleaner. Afterward, use a spare toothbrush to clear out any remaining plaque for a sparkling clean tray.

Some Extra Tips to Keep Your Trays Extra Clean

  • Always Bring Your Case with You
Leaving your trays out in the open can accelerate bacterial build-up, so bring your case with you at all times just to be safe. If you have to leave them out, remember to rinse, soak, and rinse again before putting them back in.
  • Do Not Eat or Drink with Them In
Invisalign trays are not built for chewing, so take them out whenever you eat or drink. This will protect them from damage and staining and will also make them last longer.
  • Pack the Next Set of Aligners When Travelling
To keep your treatment on track, bring your next set of aligners with you! Skipping or delaying the next trays can set you back and make your treatment longer than originally planned.
  • Toothpaste is for Your Teeth Only
Many people make this mistake, thinking that if toothpaste can clean their teeth, it must be suitable for their aligners too, but this is a big no-no. Toothpaste can stain or make the trays cloudy!
